Why I'm Not a Fan of Restrictive Early Action (REA)

Restrictive Early Action colleges include Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, and to a lesser extent, Notre Dame and Georgetown, but I don't love any of these colleges' early admission plans. That example you gave of all the challenges the kid might have faced if he went to that "dangerous" public school where the parents were worried about his safety (wrong peer group, people doing bad things around the kid, etc) are all the reasons why ivies making sure to admit such kids is so important. A kid who gets through all of that, recognizes why it's a problem and ESPECIALLY if they've done things to improve that community, deserves all the clout and the position at the ivy over the kid with a 1530 who didn't have to overcome those challenges. And then what are the chances the kid with the 1530 from a different community comes back to take a positive leadership role in the aforementioned "dangerous" community in comparison to the 1350 kid?

Hello, I am a rising senior with legacy to Stanford. I've heard from some sources that choosing to apply RD to Stanford rather than applying REA would actually result in a net negative in regards to my admissions chances. Would this be a fair reason to apply REA, amongst others?

Thanks for the video Craig. Quick follow up - if you apply to a restrictive early action school and get deferred are you then able to apply to another school later in the process as Early Decision II or do those restrictions follow through the entire process with the original application at those REA schools? Thanks for all the great content you produce.

Once a student gets deferred, the student is free to apply EDII elsewhere. Good luck.

Craig, love your videos and agree with almost all of this one although I had to watch it twice to keep it all straight. I am wondering about the ND conclusion, and if I'm wrong, I will yield to your knowledge on the matter. But from what I can find on the ND site, they admitted 1724 of 11498 REA applicants in Dec. So 15% of applicants. And for RD in March, they admitted 1600 of 18445 applicants, so 8.7%. That tells me two things, one is that the admit rate is quite a bit higher for REA. And also that they're filling half their class with REA. Maybe more if you assume a healthy yield for REA. Am I missing something there? ND is really high on our list, so this one is kind of important to us.

Thank you for your feedback. For Notre Dame's Class of 2028, the spread between REA and Regular was more impressive than last cycle, but still less than 2x higher, which is when an early admissions plan becomes more attractive from the perspective of the family. Many colleges that offer Early Decision, for instance, have a 3x or higher acceptance rate for ED compared to Regular. The statistics you shared appear to be correct for the Class of 2028, representing a 1.72x advantage for REA over Regular. Just the year before, for the Class of 2027, the spread was a 1.53x advantage for REA over Regular. In short, there is a statistical advantage for REA, but not nearly as high as it should be, in my estimation, for students who know Notre Dame is their first choice. Good luck.

Although males in general are not as strong as females with expressive language, self-reflection at this age for both boys and girls is not well developed. Experiential learning experiences are important across applicants. Curious if you have looked at the definition of 'red-blooded American men?' The Cambridge Dictionary defines them as '... someone who seems full of confidence or sexual energy.' There are various parts of the application process that are more advantageous to one group over another. This is why a holistic review of applications is important.

I can only speak from my experience, and this is from someone who is currently a PhD student, there are a lot of problems with academia. I didn't start college until I was 39, so for most of my adult life I was not a college graduate, and I earn really good money, when I say really good I earn within the top 10% of Americans, and did it with zero college education. In fact at this point I've made almost nothing from my college education, I went to college for something new, and it was 100% paid for. I've never taken an entrance exam, ACT, SAT, or GRE. It just wasn't necessary. A lot of younger men I know are just not seeing college as necessary, and again from my experience, just a few weeks ago I sat in my lab at my university and listened to three women speak very poorly of men, right in front of me, I've only experienced this attitude towards men at college, and it is everywhere. I work full time as well, my boss is a woman, half my co-workers are women, and none of them talk about men the way I have heard women in academia speak about men. I also think that going to college doesn't equal intelligence. My dad is one of the most intelligent men I have ever known, and he has never sat in a college classroom. For the money you pay, the return in many cases is just not worth it now.

Emerson is a competitive college to be admitted to. There is a demographic cliff somewhere, whereby there were simply less children born and therefore, less students to educate. Critical to keep an eye on the enrollment figures as they are released in the coming weeks to see if what happened at Emerson is part of a wider trend.

At this point kids are doing more of a favor for these colleges than colleges are doing for these kids. Colleges aren't helping most students get jobs or pay back their loans, but they're picking kids that they think are most likely to be famous (if they're not already). The most selective colleges pick a lot of kids that are so successful and rich by the time they get to campus that they arguably don't even need the school.

These colleges have to deflect away from objective metrics so that they can better justify tilting to scales in favor of less qualified applicants. Also, it will help them identify the woke crusaders in the applicant pool so they can move them to the front of the line (see David Hogg getting into Harvard with mediocre academic credentials).
